New batch of earthenware jugbirds

I haven't had any luck locating a salt kiln nearby just yet but over the next months I'm sure I'll connect with someone who needs to get salting done!

Meanwhile the Granville Island galleries say all the old colourful slip-painted earthenware jugbirds are gone so I made 12 more over the last few weeks. They DO take far too long to make - but they still give me pleasure. The first photo shows the ones going to Gallery of BC Ceramics. The second shows those for Circle Craft.

The solo one is my current favourite, a Pileated Woodpecker!

I will have lots to write in my blog a month from now. Watch this space then!

TriCity Potters show opens

TriCity Potters' first show opened last Thursday evening in the 3D Gallery of Port Moody's Arts Centre. The two ceramic and two painting shows were enthusiastically received. Here are photos of those potters I managed to catch next to their work. I've made a picasa album of images of all the work - it's too many photos for here.

Keith Rice-Jones’ show ‘Size Matters’

Yesterday Alan and I went in to Granville Island for the opening of Keith Rice-Jones' show 'Size Matters' at the Gallery of BC Ceramics. He worked on the ideas for these large garden pieces while on a 3-month solo residency at Sturt Pottery in Australia. The work looked fine in the gallery space, on plain concrete, in September sunshine.

As gallery manager Sharon Cohen said, it was a complete contrast to the previous wildly colourful show by Laura VanderLinde. September is a great time for a show there - I am remembering my 'Ornithikos' show which opened at this time 7 years ago. It launched my jugbirds and was a very exciting time for me.

Two guests were Ken (photographer and sculptor) and Carol  (ceramics curator) Mayer,

Best wishes for a successful month, Keith.

Eric Metcalfe likes to paint on clay

On Monday I used the lovely Canada Line skytrain to take some more pots to YVR airport Crafthouse. So convenient. Then I rode it all the way downtown to go to the passport office in Sinclair Centre. Off to UK and Turkey later this month..

I popped into the Western Front in Mount Pleasant to drop off two plates for artist Eric Metcalfe. I'd made them for him to paint for friends. While there I noticed some splendid porcelain vases on his shelf. Produced by/for Paul Mathieu in China they had been painted by Paul and Eric. Splendid!
