Hummingbird Oil Pourers

I fired my kiln with a small load recently as I wanted to have all the work from the most recent ‘Raid’ fired before the group is here again this week. It also gave me a chance to do further tests of the new Mayco commercial glaze on my own red earthenware work.

Pierre Coupey

Just one of Pierre Coupey’s large round platters didn’t make it into the previous glaze firing. This one features the letter F!

My two coupes were painted with coloured slips and I painted the underside with contrasting terra sigillata. It feels comfortable and I’m pleased with the quality of the clear glaze (fired to cone 05).

The Green Woodpecker is one of a series of English bird jugs I plan to take to Primavera Gallery in Cambridge soon. Gallery owner Jeremy Waller asked me for some new bird designs but I haven’t had time to make all his suggestions. He asked for Hummingbirds. Well, their beaks don’t lend themselves to a spout so I’ve dreamed up a Hummingbird Oil Pourer. What do you think?

The kiln fired again last night so tomorrow I’ll be taking out the remaining Cambridge-destined jugbirds and some bird plates. They have been bisque-fired (to cone 04) along with all the white earthenware slab plates and platters for a bigger than usual ‘Raid’ on Wednesday. I hope I’ve made enough.
