Last Wednesday Al and I went in to Vancouver. I had made a late-afternoon appointment to drop off a new selection of work at Circle Craft. If you pop in there you’ll see that I left jolly earthenware jugbirds and several special soda pieces.

Before going down to Granville Island we stopped in at Pulp Fiction Books so that I could deliver the ‘Constructivist Yunomi’ that Chris Brayshaw had selected and check the current show in CSA Space, upstairs in the same building.

Lucky me, almost as soon as he took possession of his new cup, Chris posted a sweet little description of it on Instagram.

Chris then led us upstairs to the little gallery, CSA Space, where work by Rob Stickney and Mark Tigges is on display. There had been a well-attended reception on the previous Friday and I noticed lots of red stickers. Chris told us that although there were no labels we’d be able to tell whose pot was made by whom because the wheel-thrown pieces are mainly by Mark and the more sculptural work is made by Rob. I’m used to seeing Rob’s yunomi so these shapes were a surprise. As in the previous show I was reminded to look under the table for hidden pieces. This is a fascinating area of Mount Pleasant, with this odd triangular building squeezed between Main street and Kingsway, and oodles of murals on so many buildings. Chris pointed out the much-loved work on his, including familiar ovoids to mark where Laurence Paul Yuxweluptun holds forth on Friday mornings, and signed Wuulhu.

Kate Metten’s pottery shop and studio is a couple of doors down from Pulp Fiction so of course I needed to pop in and say hello to one of the ‘Raiders’. She had a sale this weekend to mark one year since she opened the shop. I came away with a pretty green yunomi.

Al and I continued on to Granville Island for a brief stop in Circle Craft and an ice cream before heading over to Kitsilano Beach. We enjoyed a beach stroll in the sunshine and had supper and a beer on the patio at ‘LOCAL Public Eatery’. I needed a drink of water in my new cup after walking back to the car.
