Jack Doherty

After finding ‘Beside the Wave’ gallery at Primrose Hill I took the tube south from Chalk Farm to Tottenham Court Road. As every potter visiting Britain knows, that’s the stop for the Contemporary Ceramics Centre at 63 Great Russell Street, Bloomsbury, London WC1B 3BF, across from the British Museum. Thinking of taking a selfie to prove I was there, a Vancouver artist friend of Jackie Frioud (Salt glaze potter) Nicola Morgan offered to take the photo for me! Jackie had sent her to this gallery to see the soda-fired work by Jack Doherty. Small world!

The front window and the gallery space featured the simple forms of Northern Ireland potter Jack Doherty.

He now lives in Mousehole, Cornwall and it is said that the ocean and rocks there are the inspiration for the surfaces on his work. It is all wheel thrown and once-fired in a soda kiln. Here is a link to more information:

I’ll just add my photos of his work to give you an idea of how the show looks. The pieces are elegant forms, subtly coloured in gentle greys, turquoises and a hint of rust. The show runs until October 28th 2017.
