Last Fall thirteen Vancouver area women spent some weeks in Sicily working together in an Art Residency, Graniti Murales. They designed and painted murals on the ancient crumbling walls of the small Medieval town of Graniti. The locals are delighted, and the women vowed to keep in touch with each other and promote each others’ work in the future. This Port Moody show, ‘From Where We Stand’ is the first in a planned series and involves eleven of the group.
I plan to attend a talk tomorrow evening when some participants will give a slide show of their Sicilian murals and walk us through the diverse styles of art on display in their current show. Having spent most of last Thursday evening admiring the ceramics of Malory Tate and the paintings by Agata Teodorowicz I shall be happy to be taken on a tour of the third show that opened that evening. Go to Port Moody Arts Centre’s website to register for the free presentation.
Agata has been a much-loved painting instructor since the Arts Centre opened more than twenty years ago. She loves to encourage youngsters to be creative and inspires older folks who have wanted to begin or get back to painting.
Recently she was invited to spend a holiday in Barcelona at the home of a former student and she fell in love with the city, and specifically its fish! Paintings of fish began to appear in Agata’s studio and when gallery manager Janice Cotter spotted them she invited Agata to put together a show all about fish. It started with fish in Barcelona’s market but has grown to include many others, including our local Fraser River sturgeon.
Enjoy some of Agata’s splendid paintings here and take yourself down to the Arts Centre soon to see the others.
All three of the current shows will be up in the galleries until August 9th.
