Eric, Kate & Pierre

Lots of work was produced by the most recent group of Raiders and Eric painted two at home as well so I have too many plates to show you in one blog. This post will show the work of Eric Metcalfe, Kate Metten and Pierre Coupey.

Eric chose to paint three of his usual lunch-size rimmed plates, allowing the rim to affect just a little of his design. It is fascinating to see how his initial drawing on a fresh plate grows into a complete new art work each time. His fourth plate is a bigger white one, still with a rim.

Kate spent almost all her time painstakingly working on a large platter. There were many layers of underglaze on the window-pane design and the end result shows subtle hints of underlying colours. Her other little triangular dish will add to her collection of these.

Pierre chose a big round platter again, this time stencilling in and wax resisting ‘MOON’ under and over black and white underglazes. His second plate is a smaller circle and includes bright red and yellow – plus some random letters.

When I dropped off some of these recent plates at the Western Front last Wednesday Eric presented me with yet another painted plate so the next batch is started! I’m amazed at his production. Every day more elegant drawings appear, sometimes to become further gouache paintings and nowadays he’s drawing extravagent ideas for Rhytons.

Next blog will show the work of Mina and Tamara.
