Sit. Stay. Speak

On a beastly rainy September Sunday afternoon there was a good turn-out at Seymour Art Gallery for the opening of Sally Michener’s solo show ‘Sit. Stay. Speak’. The link to the gallery below gives a concise explanation of Sally’s work, her biography and the current work.

For many of her fans who showed up to support their favourite clay sculptor, Sally is a fondly remembered Emily Carr U instructor.

A catalogue has been produced by SAG for this show, with an essay by curator Mary Fox and fine photographs by Yvonne Hachkowski of many of the dogs in this show. It is a useful momento of this charming exhibit of Sally’s latest work. She tells me that she has been working on these pieces over the last couple of years. They are a departure from her torso and columnar sculptures, but continue with her signature method of covering her bisque-fired forms with collected ceramic and glass tiles and shards.

Along with her extensive biography of shows and teaching, there is a fuller description of her fabricating process in the catalogue. I may not quote from the essay therein but I can include a photograph of Mary Fox’s quote about Sally’s work.

Allow my photos to give you an idea of this delightful show, see the dogs set at waist-level the better to enjoy them, and know that Sally has used her fondness for her current pet Diego, and his predecessors as inspiration for this series.
