Shadbolt Soda

The vault soda kiln was turned off last Friday, after techs Linda, Jay and Cheryl finished spraying the soda in. First impressions when the kiln door was opened on Tuesday were that they got it right! Pots were still warm so we wore gloves to pass ware from one excited participant to the next. Below are closer looks at the first peek.

Once the front pots were removed Cheryl demonstrated how to safely scrape and damp-wipe the shelves and apply kiln wash ready for the next soda firing. Masks are crucial as there’s powdered glass floating about as we do this.

So that notes can be made on what happened where, the pots were placed in two long rows for discussion.

I’m including many photos today. There was lots to learn from studying each other’s work.

After we’d all finished cleaning shelves and before all the pots were packed up and taken away I asked some of the group to let me take their photo with a favourite pot. It was nice to see work made by our capable techs.

Now, to finish up, here are three pieces that made us happy, photographed on nearby logs awaiting the next wood firing. Thank you Shadbolt Centre and techs Jay, Linda and Cheryl for making it possible for a group of us to indulge our love of atmospheric firing.

Also, thank you very much Linda Lebrun for giving up your afternoon to drive me to the unloading and even taking a turn in shelf cleaning.

Now I plan to take better photos of my own pieces and I’ll post those in my next blog.
