My favourite piece to come out of my two recent glaze firings is the Pileated Woodpecker Jugbird. In early January I posted a photo of his beginnings and here is a photo of him being painted later.

painting pilly

He has a wheel-thrown body, head, legs and neck. Those parts are carefully fitted together and I add his jolly crest, a slot for filling and pouring and a handle, and then have the satisfying job of painting him with my black slip, porcelain and red underglaze. To be honest he’s not really about pouring but folks like the idea that he could be functional!

I have chosen to enter him in the TriCity Potters’ upcoming show, ‘A Celebration in Clay’, along with two other smaller jugbirds.

Those are a Northern Flicker Jugbird and a Puffin Jugbird. They are my way of celebrating clay.

Remembering a silly bird mug from a while ago I made up half a dozen more, and then painted a coupe plate to match them so I’ll put a pair and the plate in the show as a ‘coffee bird set’.

My fifth entry is to be a memory of warmer times in my garden. The Stargazer Lily was the prettiest of the many that performed so beautifully in last summer’s heat. The plate reminds me that I do enjoy painting almost as much as potting.

At tomorrow’s monthly meeting of TriCity Potters all members will be bringing in their entries. There will be so many techniques on display and stories to hear about the making adventures so it should be a really interesting evening. Then we’ll be bringing the work home to my studio to be stored until set-up day back at Port Moody Arts Centre next week. The show opening will be on Thursday March 2nd.
