TriCity Potters at Deer Lake Art Gallery opening

Lots of our members came to the opening of ‘Various Vases’ at Deer Lake Art Gallery. I took photos of the pottery and the potters.

There was a feeling that the work was well displayed on the plinths, a coffee table and the mantelpiece and that the work was hugely varied and interesting. Some of the drawings complementing the pots were very good and led to a discussion of our having a drawing session at one of our monthly meetings.

The North Burnaby MLA (help me out here, Bill Thomson!) attended the opening and presented the gallery with a certificate of appreciation! Our members and the three drawers brought lots of snacks so it was a happy afternoon of conversation.

Another thought going around as a result of this show was about what the next challenge could be. Please leave a comment or let one of the TCP exec. know if you have an idea. We’ve made Better Butter Boxes, put handles on each others’ mugs, made Bountiful Bowls, candle holders for Amnesty International, tree decorations for Douglas College Foundation and now Various Vases. Jolly Jugs/Proud Pitchers?

Our immediate focus should be on our upcoming show at Port Moody Arts Centre which will coincide with elementum, next March’s Canadian Clay Ceramic Symposium at Shadbolt Centre. The theme for the symposium is Form, Function, Feast and we have chosen to exhibit our entries for ‘A Fantastic Feast’. Fredi Rahn will be the juror for our first truly juried show. So as soon as your Christmas holiday is over dig out your sketch pad and new clay and design some Fantastic Feast ware. Your entry can be anything that might be used to enhance said feast whether it’s serving dishes, drinking vessels or decorative pieces for the dining room. And you might like to decide who or what is doing the feasting! I’ll put out a call for entry for any potters. Entrants must be members of TriCity Potters and pay $10 and the work must be delivered in early March.
