Around the World in 80 Plates

Maggi Kneer’s show “Around the World in 80 Plates” opened on Thursday May 2nd at the Gallery of BC Ceramics.

Maggi loves to travel and has visited 60 countries. For this show she has hand-built eighty plates and has applied decals made from her collection of photographs. One could spend a long while with Maggi hearing all the stories that accompany the images. For her they evoke strong memories of her favourite places.

At the opening I asked her which are her favourite plates – not a fair question. I’m sure that each is the favourite while it is being created. But she drew me to a group which represent her time in Burma.

Maggi has spent twice spent a month at Medalta and on her recent residency last July she was able to take advantage of their decal making machine. What fun she obviously had!

Some of the plates are part of a set she made for one of her son’s wedding, all guests received one to take home. Another son Marc was at the opening to support his mum.

If you are on Granville Island take some time to look carefully at the thoughtful arrangements of images on these plates. The show will be up until June 3rd.
