Denys James

To start our TriCity Potters’ meeting last Wednesday June announced the winner of the Peoples’ Choice Award. Visitors to “Fantastic Feast” at Port Moody Art Centre voted for their favourite piece in the show, and the winner is Maple Ridge resident and our board member Brigitta Schneiter. Congratulations! Her prize is a tempting basket of gourmet food from local Eden West Fine Foods. Thank you for sponsoring the prize, Eden West.

Denys James was the speaker for the evening. He lives on Saltspring Island but managed to do a trip to Greenbarn Pottery Supply and other errands to justify coming over on the ferry. Thank you Linda for providing Denys with a home for the night.

Some members of our group have travelled with Denys on pottery tours he has led and I gather Linda and Christine will be going to Sicily with him this September. But Denys didn’t want to concentrate on that part of his life. He talked a bit about his years of teaching pottery, described his home and studio and showed us photos of his sculptural work. He is most interested in life drawing and in creating surfaces, using clay and stains and not much glaze.

This was another interesting evening with lots of inspiration from pots, tiles, buildings and exotic places.

Good luck with your work and travels Denys. One of these days …
