Today we had another Raid! Renée van Halm had contacted a small group to settle on a day and this morning she arrived here at 10am with Eric Metcalfe, Monique Fouquet and David MacWilliam.

The artists quickly settled on which plates they’d like to paint today. David was here for a Raid a long time ago so we had a discussion about whether he’d like to paint on bone-dry or bisque (either is good). Renée prefers bone dry for the way the underglaze is quickly absorbed. Here Al pops down to the studio to say hello.
As usual a marvellous potluck lunch materialized. Monique was up at the crack of dawn to bake us a delicious crustless quiche, Renée made a winter salad and brought home-made pickles, David found another salad, special bread and Cheshire cheese and Eric brought a baguette and sliced ham. Perfect!
During the afternoon my TriCity Potters friend Linda Lebrun came by to add her little sgraffito illustration to the TCP collaborative platter. She enjoyed meeting the Raiders and chatted with Eric about his work.
Finally it was time for a cup of tea before the Raiders headed home in Renée’s electric car. Each artist completed work on two plates, me, I slip-painted a leather-hard lunch plate (coupe). What a fascinating variety of ideas appeared. Watch for the finished ware in a few weeks.
Eric took home the plate he had finished earlier with yellow underglaze and black underglaze pencil. He is interested in showing the drawing process in this abstract, but ‘not decorative’ piece. One of the plates he finished today will be a companion to this one.
I shall return to recording our visits to potteries on the Sunshine Coast as soon as I find time. But Alan and I have tickets to see a new film about Saskatchewan sculptor Joe Fafard at Emily Carr U tomorrow evening.
I love Eric’s abstract design, my favourite so far.
