Evocativa Curiosa

‘Evocativa Curiosa’ Exhibition
Featuring work by Debbie Cheung, Diane Espiritu, Darcy Greiner, Leon Popik, David Robinson and Clive Tucker.

Showing: February 7—March 4

On Thursday evening I attended the opening of this show at the Gallery of BC Ceramics. It was great to meet the six artists and to see what each person is working on. All the work refers slightly to the body or erotica, but only slightly!

I tried to take some photos but didn’t do too well in the evening light. The photos taken by gallery assistant Carito Ho and posted on the gallery’s facebook page were much better. I wish I could figure out how to link all 43 photos to this blog. Instead I recommend you just get to the gallery before March 4th yourself.

Diane Espiritu has made pillowy wall pieces.

David Robinson is showing some quiet, snuggled-together vases with fleshy interiors.

Darcy Grenier’s sculptures are based on torsos.

Debbie Chung has some definitely boob-like measuring cups.

Clive Tucker has been canning peaches, pears and putti to surprising and slightly disturbing effect. He has sent me a little video of one of these pieces.

And Leon Popik is showing oxide-stained sculptures which could be interpreted as representing body parts.

When I arrived at the gallery, manager Laura Carey introduced me to pottery collector Dave Carlin and we had a great conversation about his passion for BC pottery over the past few decades. He will be showing some of his collection in the Fall.

I later bumped into him and clay artist James Kemp when I stopped in at Circle Craft to see James’ display in their gallery. TriCity Potters heard James and saw his recent sculptures at our January meeting.
